Correspondence to Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, ca. 1909-1943.

Correspondence from Ossip Gabrilowitsch consists of 1 postcard written to Alma Mahler while she and Gustav Mahler were in Paris (ca. 1909) and 1 letter of 1934 written while Gabrilowitsch was director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He is apparently responding to a letter from Alma Mahler about the idea of an Austrian monarchy; he expresses in detail his rejection of the notion that a monarchical form of government offers any particular safeguard against the rise of anti-Semitism. 1 of Clara Gabrilowitsch's letters concerns the sudden illness of Ossip Gabrilowitsch in 1935; and 1 is an enthusiastic letter to Franz Werfel responding to his novel The Song of Bernadette. The folder also includes 3 blank postcards and 1 fragment of what appears to be a photographic print; the relationship of these items to the correspondents is unclear. 1 of the postcards possibly is a photograph of Alma Mahler in Venice, and the print fragment shows a child, possibly standing on a ship deck.
